Would you have caught it?

Developers approve 93% of their AI agents' requests. The risky ones look just like the rest. Can you tell which?

Production deleted: database, network, cluster, load balancers and snapshots.

Nothing harmful ran, but the job didn't get done either.

You missed it. So did the developer it happened to.

You caught it. The developer it happened to didn't.

Too cautious. You stopped the harmful one, and safe work with it.

“Claude Code deletes developers' production setup, including its database and snapshots — 2.5 years of records were nuked in an instant”

Alexey Grigorev, founder of DataTalks.Club, asked Claude Code to clean up duplicate resources after a Terraform apply, and gave it his old Terraform folder to compare. The agent swapped in the old state file, which described the live course platform, then ran terraform destroy.

“I over-relied on the AI agent to run Terraform commands.”

Root cause: Hidden impact

terraform.tfstate · what Terraform thinks it manages

- current state: 6 resources, yesterday's duplicates+ old-infra state: 47 resources, the live platform

Neither command mentions production. The first changed what Terraform thought it owned. The second destroyed all of it. One at a time, each looked like the cleanup you asked for.

Resource counts and terminal output are illustrative.
